Promoting British Values and Upholding the UNICEF Rights of the Child in Our Curriculum

At Queen's Crescent, we are committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment where children can thrive academically, socially, and morally. As a school, we proudly embrace and promote the fundamental British Values: Democracy, The Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect, and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs. Simultaneously, we integrate the principles of the UNICEF Rights of the Child into every aspect of our curriculum and school ethos.

British Values in Our Curriculum

  1. Democracy
    • We actively involve pupils in decision-making through our School Council, class discussions, and pupil voice surveys, ensuring they understand the importance of representation and shared decision-making.
    • Lessons in subjects such as PSHE and History explore democratic processes and the value of participation in society.
  2. The Rule of Law
    • We emphasise the importance of laws in creating a fair and safe community. Pupils learn about the role of rules in our school and the wider society through assemblies, our RE curriculum and visits from community figures such as police officers and local councillors,.
    • Clear expectations of behaviour are reinforced, teaching children the consequences of their actions and the value of justice.
  3. Individual Liberty
    • Our curriculum promotes self-confidence and empowers pupils to express themselves while respecting the rights of others. We teach children to understand and make choices within a framework of personal and social responsibility.
    • Topics like e-safety and anti-bullying equip pupils with skills to make informed decisions and stay safe.
  4. Mutual Respect
    • Respect is a cornerstone of our school ethos. Through activities like teamwork, peer mentoring, and discussions, pupils learn to value others regardless of differences.
    • Events such as anti-bullying week and inclusion workshops celebrate diversity and encourage positive relationships.
  5. Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
    • Our RE (Religious Education) curriculum introduces pupils to a range of world religions, traditions, and cultures, fostering understanding and appreciation of diversity.
    • We mark key festivals and encourage intercultural learning through themed days, visits to places of worship, and engagement with community leaders.
UNICEF Rights of the Child in Our Curriculum

We proudly uphold the values of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), ensuring that every child knows and experiences their rights. Some of the key ways we integrate these rights include:

  1. Article 12: Respect for Children’s Views
    • Pupil voice is a priority in shaping our school’s policies, curriculum design, and enrichment opportunities. We ensure children feel heard and valued.
  2. Article 28: Right to Education
    • We strive for excellence in teaching and learning, ensuring that all pupils have access to high-quality education in a stimulating and supportive environment.
  3. Article 29: Goals of Education
    • Our curriculum is designed to help every child develop their talents, personality, and abilities to the fullest while promoting respect for human rights and cultural identity.
  4. Article 19: Protection from Harm
    • Safeguarding is at the heart of our school. We educate children about staying safe, healthy relationships, and identifying trusted adults they can turn to for support.
  5. Article 31: Right to Rest, Play, and Culture
    • We recognise the importance of play and creativity in children’s development, offering a range of opportunities, arts, sports, and cultural experiences to enrich their learning.
Bringing It All Together

At Queen's Crescent we strive to create a holistic learning environment where pupils develop as knowledgeable, responsible, and compassionate individuals. By embedding British Values and the Rights of the Child into our curriculum, we ensure our children are well-prepared for life in modern Britain and inspired to contribute to a fair, inclusive, and sustainable global community.
